Getting there

The easiest way to reach Lucca is by flying to one of the following nearby international airports:
​
  1. Pisa International Airport (PSA): a 30-minute drive or train ride to Lucca;
     
  2. Florence Airport (FLR): a 1h30-minute drive or train ride away from Lucca; and
     
  3. Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO): a 3 to 4 hour drive or train ride away from Lucca. If you’ve never been to Rome, we suggest flying into Fiumicino Airport as there are many direct flights from Montreal. It is the perfect city to explore before heading to Lucca.
While it’s possible to rent a car or take a taxi from any of the airports mentioned above to reach Lucca, we highly recommend traveling by train. Italy’s rail system is efficient and a great way to see the countryside. Tickets can be booked online via ItaliaRail or Trenitalia.

Major international brands like Budget, Hertz,  and Europcar, can be booked through platforms like Booking.com and Kayak. Auto Europe is equally an amazing website that offers compared pricing to ensure you book the best rates. 

You can pick up or drop off the car at all of the nearby airports such as the Pisa International Airport (PSA), Florence Airport (FLR) and Rome Fimucino Airport (FCO). 

The following companies have locations in Lucca where you can pick up or drop off your rented car: 
  • Hertz has 1 location at Via Vecchia Pesciatina 61, in the City of Lucca, Italy
  • Budget has 1 location at Via Carlo Del Prete 417, in the City of Lucca, Italy

It is best to book around 60-70 days ahead to lock in better rates.  

Please keep in mind that an International Driver's Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended, as Canadian licenses will not be accepted.  The permit is valid for 1-3 years and you will receive instant approval. 
 
For those interested in booking a private transfer/driver to be picked up from the airport, the company Road Trippin' Italy (based in Lucca) has given us preferential rates to offer our guests.
  • For private transfers from the Pisa airport to Lucca or from Lucca to the Pisa airport, the rate is 150 Euros per way
  • For private transfers from the Florence airport to Lucca or from Lucca to the Florence airport, the rate is 250 Euros per way

Palazzo Dipinto

This 4 star hotel is equally located in Lucca's Historical Center. Check in is after 2:30 p.m. and check-out is by 11:30 a.m. If you need a few extra hours in your room, you can request a late check-out, subject to availability. If you like, on the day of your departure, you can store your luggage at the reception and collect it later, giving you time for one last stroll around Lucca.

Buffet breakfast is always included in the room rates and is available from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

It is a 15 minute drive to Villa Grabau and an 8 minute walk from Lucca's popular Piazza dell'Anfiteatro.​​

Villa Del Papa

Away from the bustle of the city, it is the refuge in the quiet and relaxation. The swimming pool, a small jewel in the countryside, surrounded by red and white rose flower beds and olive centenary seems to be his guardian. 

This villa is a 25 minute drive to Villa Grabau and a 15 minute drive to Lucca's Piazza dell'Anfiteatro/ the downtown area. It is essentially in the middle of Lucca and Pisa.

This hotel is recommended if you are renting a car. However, the villa has made arrangements to provide guests with an efficient taxi service.

Villa Grabau's Properties

Villa Grabau offers 3 different Villas on the property, including:

Piccolo Hotel Puccini

Guinigi Tower and Piazza dell'Anfiteatro are within 10 minutes walking. Lucca Station is 8 minutes by foot. The Pisa airport is a 23 minute drive away. Villa Grabau is also a 20 minute drive away. 

Villa Lucrezia

Villa Lucrezia is a boutique hotel that has its own private inner parking to allow guests to forget their cars and discover the deep charm of Lucca just walking or riding the bikes available for free.

This hotel is a 12 minute drive to Villa Grabau and a 15 minute walk to Lucca's Piazza dell'Anfiteatro/ the downtown area. 

Check-in is between 2 to 6:30 p.m., and check-out is before 11:30 a.m. 

Airbnb

We always highly recommend looking into Airbnb options in and around Lucca’s historic center. The city offers a variety of beautiful apartments, villas, and countryside homes — many within walking distance of charming cafes, restaurants, and the wedding venues.

 

When searching, we suggest filtering for:​

  • Amenities: Air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and parking (if you plan to rent a car).

  • Stay duration: We recommend booking early, as June is a popular travel month in Tuscany.

 

If you’re traveling as a group, an Airbnb villa or larger countryside home can be both cost-effective and a lovely way to experience the region together.
