Tower of Pisa
Piazza del Duomo
Pisa, Tuscany, Italy

One of Tuscany's most famous landmarks, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, is just a short and easy trip from Lucca. Built over 800 years ago, this white-marble bell tower began to tilt during construction due to the unstable ground. Rather than correcting the tilt, it became a defining feature. The train ride from Lucca to Pisa Centrale can take roughly 25 to 30 minutes, as the trains run frequently throughout the day. From Pisa Centrale station, the Leaning Tower is just a 20-minute walk away or a short taxi ride. We recommend buying your train tickets at the station or online via the Trenitalia website/app. Arriving early is best if you wish to climb the tower for panoramic views of Pisa, as these tickets frequently sell out.

Guinigi Tower

29 Via Guinigi,

Lucca, Tuscany, Italy

Climb its 230 steps, and you’ll be rewarded with one of the most breathtaking views of the city. In medieval times, Lucca was dotted with over 200 house-towers, built by the city’s most influential families in a kind of architectural competition for height and prestige. The more powerful the family, the higher their tower. The Guinigi Tower is one of the few that survived. Many towers were later destroyed or shortened—“scalped,” as the term went—if their owners fell from political or financial grace.
